Working It

I've been thinking a lot about this post from 2007, in which I kind of make fun of someone working on their marriage. Excuse me, I mean "helling on their hell".

Things are snapping back to normal. It's cold and light and day. Let's take a moment to miss the sparkle of things I do not have.

I feel like God has protected me. People have protected me. Things could have been so much worse. I am so grateful for the friends I have. All my friends are totally fantastic people. Back when I didn't have things to worry about I wondered if I was an elitest. Yes. Yes I am. You're the best. : )

I don't know if there are people who have easy marriages -- certainly there are people who from the outside look like they have easy marriages, where things just fall in place and stay in place. But whenever I've been privy to the inside workings of a marriage, they were in fact "workings." I think your friend (in the 2007 post) was taking it to an extreme, I don't think you can programe discussions and make appointments with your spouse (unless you are deeply in trouble and then those need to be with a therapist in attendance). My first marriage wasn't any work at all, but then it was over in 2 years. Love makes a big difference, it gives you motivation to work on stuff. The thing about getting through the bad year, is that the next bad year that comes along is likely to be totally different and push totally different buttons in your psyche and your relationship.
P.S., I don't think its elitist, just lack of experience, which given the way the world works will always be remedied.
