Cakewalk

Couldn't sleep in for worrying about stupid things, like this...

See the video of the JC Penney commercial, about 17 seconds in, a girl steps into a large cake as everyone applauds. Why? Why is her mom not doing sommersaults through the air to stop this?

Okay, it's just a commercial, but still. They supraliminally turned me off. Is this typical "American Living"? Indulgent wastefulness? In this economy? Some extreme Antoinette-zi, "No cake for you!" What will the world think if they see this?

I'm glad I got up and looked into it. Cake-stepping is an international problem.

But it's okay for babies. : )

Now I can go sleep for another hour. Good morning.

Can't say that I've lost sleep over it, but that few seconds in that commercial has been bothering me too. I can't help thinking about the red boots -- are they rubber? If they aren't how destroyed are they? How much did they cost? Why is the child on the table? If this is her birthday, why are there only adults in the room?

Everyone has a great photo (or home movie or video -- depending on how old you are) of their one-year-old self smashing their fists (or other parts of anatomy) in the brithday cake (mine's a black and white photo - actually two the before fist and after fist photos). It's cute when a one year old does it. Not so cute for an eight or nine year old.

Yeah, it's a disturbing image.

Good points! There are just 2 more kids at the party. I can't tell you how much the boots are because they don't sell those boots!

Thanks for the link. You know, if J.C. Penny were really providing clothes for American Living (the way we really are) the women's sizes wouldn't stop at 16!!

That's right! : )

I missed the most important problem, pointed out here:

The clothes aren't made in the USA.

I despise the commercial with the little girl stomping into a pristine cake with her galoshes. It is ironic that the ad's theme is "American Living/classics", but the disturbing image of a roomful of beautiful thirty-somethings cheering while an eight year old girl destroys a large party cake is quite un-American. It seeks to belittle tradition, and glorifies waste, disrespect, and selfishness. It's not cute in the least. No wonder JC Penney's is such a loser in the retail world. They choose an ad that will alienate the very Americans they ostensibly hope to attract. Idiots.

This ad has been bothering me for some time. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone.

JC Penney's TV ads have gotten stranger and stranger lately, but this one "takes the cake," if you'll pardon the pun. I'm not sure what demographic they're going after with this ad, but it sure doesn't make me want to give them my business!
