Obviosity: The cooler something is, the less time it takes.
If a project is barely possible, you will stay with it long hours, never lose focus and fend off all but the direst distractions to accomplish it.
(The flip-side though is, sitting around doing nothing takes just as much time as doing something.)
Add interest to your drudgery using technology, humor, music and challenging yourself to beat your personal best.
