Down Numbery Lane

This weekend was my Dad's birthday and my stepmom took us out to eat. Thank you, Ruthann!

Recently, my Dad was telling me about the accounting jobs he had over the years and how it was back then. I was thinking about how lucky I am to have gotten to work for him in high school. It was just neat, so 3 dimensional. You know what's what when you have to write it all up on 13-column pads and post to an actual ledger book.
I know that "pencil-foot" is not a baby pirate.

Doing an Accounts Receivable aging was an entire day ordeal that involved a chunky rack of customer cards and typewriter tabs.

Then came Lotus 1-2-3 with it's amber points of light, then Excel and various accounting programs. I've got to get used to the new version of Office, 2007. They've hidden all the buttons, to make them easier to find.

I'm just bummed I didn't come along even earlier and get to try a comptometer.

Your post brought back memories! I did accounts receivable bookkeeping for a small manufacturing firm in 1974. I remember doing that "aging"! Didn't use a "comptometer" but the adding machine (not a calculator) became an unconscious extension of my right hand! Got so I couldn't add 2 + 2 without punching it into the machine. I especially remember the days when there was a missing penny somewhere and I had to go back through all the invoices and shipping ladles until I could find it. I actually loved that job -- everything was so precise!

It's great! You always know when you're done: It balances.
