After the Summer, Comes the Fall

I keep thinking about this lady in a documentary about holocaust survivors. I don't remember which documentary. She was a teenager at the time. I was just really struck by something she said, "That first year, we still took our holiday at the seaside."

It's just, where are we headed? We're decimated; Where will it end?

I think the most disturbing part about growing older is that you lose that "invincible sheen" that you grew up with. No longer do you say "Yes, four people were killed in an auto accident upstate but it'll never happen to me" or "Yes, Billy's mother is having chemotherapy but it'll never happen to me or anyone _I_ know" . . .

Because you're finally realizing that not only could it happen to you or someone you know tomorrow, but that in many ways, it's inevitable.

We need to invent a new set of denials for the over-50s . . .

So many people are getting laid off. But some of them are taking it as an opportunity. Lemonade!

(I've only got 2 more months as a in my 30's.)
