Choose Your Own Adventure

My friend said, "Did you choose to have a good day or bad day today?" The rest of us said, "You get to choose?" : )

To have a good day, you had to have gotten a good night's sleep, eaten decent food, brushed your teeth, done your laundry, gone to school and learned how to do things, paid your electric bill, gassed up the car, set the alarm clock.... There's quite a lot that goes into a good day.

Run into the guardrail, say a few choice words to your boss, to your spouse... Having a bad day is easy!

My good days are dictated by three little people and the moods they choose to wake up in....

It would be very nice to be able to choose for myself once in awhile. ;)

Ah. I've had a grumpy morning bear in my house for years. The only thing that seems to help is feeding him immediately. Some good choices are instant oatmeal, a microwaved scrambled egg with bacon bits, breakfast hot pockets, or buttered toast. Kid cereal, pop tarts or donuts don't seem to help with his mood at all. :(

I realize that life with children is different than the life I lead so I can't say that my experiences really apply to other people. However, as I look back over my life, I realize how many of the "good days" had very unpleasant things happen in them (like the day my old VW blew up in the middle of nowhere West Virginia or the time I fell off the top bunk at 3 AM on my 26th birthday and broke my arm and was all alone), while some of the dreadful days had nothing much wrong with them other than how I reacted to the people around me.

It's not at all easy, and I often (make that very often) fail to make the right choices, but I think much of the time (if not always) whether it is a good day or a bad day is usually my choice to make.

I know. It's not actually really always a choice, is it? It was just surprising to realize how much awful lot of little work goes into just keeping things steady and doing the best we can.

Dreadful is easy even when we try.
